At least 40 people have been killed in another attack in Niger, when a group of armed assailants ravaged several villages in the Tahoua region near the border with Mali, the government said on Monday. Government spokesperson Abdoulraman Zakaria said on Monday that soldiers were sent to the region and fought the attackers. It was not known who was behind the attack. Numerous armed groups are active in Niger and in neighbouring Sahel countries. Some have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State, while others are linked to al-Qaeda. The government has little control over the desert areas outside the cities, a situation which is exploited by jihadist groups and criminal networks such as people smugglers. In the Mali border region, there have been recurring attacks. On March 16, at least 58 people were killed in an attack on market traders in the region of Tillaberi, the government said. Niger has also seen demonstrations after the recent presidential election. At the end of Februa...

Racism Debate on CNN Was Already Tense. When Trump Supporter Tells Guest to 'Shut Up,' Things Come Totally Unglued

Image
The despicable white supremacist event “Unite the Right” in Charlottesville, Virginia, has the nation in an uproar after things turned violent and one innocent person was left dead. Across the country, intense discussions about race have dominated the media landscape and flooded Twitter and Facebook as people try to heal and understand this weekend's violent events. Things were no different on CNN. Host Chris Cuomo welcomed contributor Symone Sanders and former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to discuss the white nationalist march and President Donald Trump's response. Things got off the rail almost instantly. Cuccinelli insisted that the statue of Robert E. Lee was an excuse to bring various racist groups together but kept getting interrupted by Sanders. He finally snapped: “Can I finish, Symone? Can you just shut up for a moment?” Screenshot/CNN Never one to back down, she shot back furiously: “You don’t get to tell me to shut up on national television. I’m s...

Trump’s top evangelical ally: God supports bombing North Korea

Image
People who listened to President Donald Trump’s remarks after North Korea threatened to launch nuclear missiles at the US in the event of an American strike — in which Trump threatened that North Korean aggression would “be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen” — might be forgiven for thinking that the president’s language sounded a little biblical. A short time after Trump spoke Tuesday afternoon, one of his closest religious advisers made that link explicit. In a statement emailed to journalists Tuesday afternoon, pastor Robert Jeffress praised Trump’s aggressive statement as a function of divine will. "When it comes to how we should deal with evil doers, the Bible, in the book of Romans, is very clear: God has endowed rulers full power to use whatever means necessary — including war — to stop evil. In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong-Un.” Jeffress has long been one of Trump’s political allies, one central to Trump an...

Atiku raises alarm over ‘anti-Igbo song’

Image
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned a song he said wished the people of Igbo ethnic group dead, warning that the country should not be allowed to slide into genocide like Rwanda. Mr. Atiku said the song currently circulating in some parts of Nigeria could trigger a major crisis as happened in Rwanda. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were killed in an inter-ethnic conflict between the Hutus and Tutsis, two major groups in the East African country in 1984, following the death of that country’s president in a plane crash. In a statement released by his media office, which he personally signed and titled, “Nigeria Does Not Need a Rwandan Deja vu”, Mr. Atiku urged all Nigerians to condemn what he said was “reminiscent of the beginning of the Rwandan Genocide.” The former president called on the security agencies to fish out and bring to trial those responsible for the song. He did not give further details of the song he was referring to. “It has come to my attention th...

South Korean military court hands army captain suspended prison sentence for having gay sex with fellow soldier

Image
A  South Korean  military court has sentenced an army captain to a suspended prison term for  having sex with a fellow male soldier  in a ruling human rights groups criticised as regressive and intimidating.  A lawyer for the captain said her client was being punished for having consensual sex with his partner in a private space. She said the captain was briefly treated at a hospital for shock following his conviction.  “It's a ridiculous ruling,” said lawyer Kim In-sook. She said the military penal code, which makes homosexual activity punishable by up to two years in prison, was unconstitutional because it tramples on basic human rights and dignity. South Korea's military, which doesn't reveal how often it pursues cases against soldiers suspected of being gay, didn't immediately make a statement.  Kim said it's unclear whether her client would appeal his six month prison sentence that was suspended by a year because he felt tormented by...

US: The Next Middle East Election to Watch For: Egypt’s 2018 Presidential Election

Image
Several countries around the Middle East,  most recently Iran , have held pivotal elections over the past few months. But, there is another important election in the next year to watch for: the Egyptian presidential election in the summer of 2018. Current President Abdelfattah El Sisi is nearing the end of his first term. Sisi first took power following the removal of President Mohammed Morsi in a July 2013 coup and rose to the presidency in a virtually uncontested election in May 2014. For many observers and critics, the election was a sham.  Sisi won with over 96% of the vote  against contender, Hamdeen Al Sabahi ( who openly praised El Sisi himself, even as he was campaigning ). The manipulation of election results is an old practice that has continued in Sisi’s Egypt. During the lead up to the referendum on a new constitution in January 2014, media supportive of the Egyptian state pushed  an overwhelming campaign in favor of a “yes” vote . Those ad...
