South Korean military court hands army captain suspended prison sentence for having gay sex with fellow soldier

Image
A  South Korean  military court has sentenced an army captain to a suspended prison term for  having sex with a fellow male soldier  in a ruling human rights groups criticised as regressive and intimidating.  A lawyer for the captain said her client was being punished for having consensual sex with his partner in a private space. She said the captain was briefly treated at a hospital for shock following his conviction.  “It's a ridiculous ruling,” said lawyer Kim In-sook. She said the military penal code, which makes homosexual activity punishable by up to two years in prison, was unconstitutional because it tramples on basic human rights and dignity. South Korea's military, which doesn't reveal how often it pursues cases against soldiers suspected of being gay, didn't immediately make a statement.  Kim said it's unclear whether her client would appeal his six month prison sentence that was suspended by a year because he felt tormented by...

U.S. Intelligence Has Come Under Fire For Leaking the Manchester Attacker's Identity

Image
US. Officials have reportedly drawn fire from their British counterparts for disclosing the identity of the Manchester suicide bomber before he was officially named by the U.K. police. Various news media—including U.K. outlets—named 22-year-old Salman Abedi as the suicide bomber who attacked the Manchester Arena citing "U.S. officials" as their source. But the British government and the Greater Manchester police both refused to confirm his identity until about two hours after his name was first published, the  Guardian   reports . More:   What to Know About Salman Abedi, Suspected Manchester Suicide Attacker The latest leaks come amid intense scrutiny of U.S. intelligence sharing following President Donald Trump's apparent disclosure of classified information—later revealed to have come from Israel—to visiting Russian officials. Interviewed on BBC Radio 4's current affairs show the  Today Program  on Wednesday morning, U.K. Home Secretary Amber Rudd...

US: The Next Middle East Election to Watch For: Egypt’s 2018 Presidential Election

Image
Several countries around the Middle East,  most recently Iran , have held pivotal elections over the past few months. But, there is another important election in the next year to watch for: the Egyptian presidential election in the summer of 2018. Current President Abdelfattah El Sisi is nearing the end of his first term. Sisi first took power following the removal of President Mohammed Morsi in a July 2013 coup and rose to the presidency in a virtually uncontested election in May 2014. For many observers and critics, the election was a sham.  Sisi won with over 96% of the vote  against contender, Hamdeen Al Sabahi ( who openly praised El Sisi himself, even as he was campaigning ). The manipulation of election results is an old practice that has continued in Sisi’s Egypt. During the lead up to the referendum on a new constitution in January 2014, media supportive of the Egyptian state pushed  an overwhelming campaign in favor of a “yes” vote . Those ad...

Libyan attacker of Manchester Arena returned from Libya days before explosion

Image
The man British police say blew himself up as a packed concert was letting out in Manchester, England Monday night had recently returned to the U.K. from Libya days before the attack, according to his friends. Salman Abedi, 22, — who was born in Britain to Libyan parents — had traveled to the war-torn North African nation “three weeks ago and came back, like, days ago,” a friend told The Times of London. Now, investigators are attempting to learn whether the university dropout attended a terrorist training camp in Libya, where ISIS and Al Qaeda fighters are engaged in a bloody war against government forces. Meanwhile, the Sun newspaper reported that authorities were also looking at the possibility that Abedi had traveled to Syria from Libya without drawing the notice of British authorities. “His potential ties to Syria now very much forms one line of inquiry,” one source told the Sun late Tuesday. However, security sources told The Times that their top priority is determinin...

Both Real and Barca are shopping for a defensive utility, who can fill in several positions, and Azpilicueta is high on the agenda. But the defender insisted: "I am very happy here, I feel very valued by the club and I do not think of anything else."

Why Buhari travelled out for treatment – Health Minister

Image
Isaac Adewole, says President Muhammadu could not be treated in Nigeria because of the long existing bond between him and his foreign doctors. He, however, assured Nigerians and the international community that there was no cause for concern over Buhari’s health. “One thing we must realise is that health is a complex issue. There’s what we call patient-doctor relationship; there is also a bond between the patient and the doctor and these are things we can’t play with,” Adewole told Thisday. “I used to have patients in Ibadan and they still call me, and say ‘we will like to see you’. Then I have to say no to them because I’m no longer available and ask, ‘why can’t you see somebody else?’ But many of them are reluctant to do so. That’s the complex thing about health. “We should give him (Buhari) that choice. What we really wish is for Mr. President to be well and hearty  “However, this is also a complex country, so I am not too happy about some of the insinuations, beca...

Image
A former chief executive officer of Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC, Atedo Peterside, has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria of discriminatory exchange rates that shows bias. “When three people are competing in the same industry and they asses forex at different rates, effectively the winner is no longer chosen by efficiency, its chosen by who is closest to central bank,” Mr. Peterside said Friday. He made the remarks as the keynote speaker at the 2017 First Quarterly Dinner of Kings College Old Boys’ Association, Abuja branch, while presenting a paper entitled “Evolving Economy, Good Governance and Repositioning Nigeria’’. Mr. Peterside described the Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) as a timid plan “that may leave us with negative GDP per capita growth throughout the plan period unless something gives”. The recovery plan has three broad strategic objectives: restoring growth of the economy, investing in the Nigerian people, and building a gl...

Exclusive – Chelsea Ola Aina Can’t Play For Nigeria Against South Africa Until England……

Image
The international future of Chelsea upcoming defender Ola Aina is far from resolved despite the start of the process of his international switch from England to Nigeria. England youth international Aina has already written to FIFA to start the process of his international switch, but it’s still unclear if it will be processed before Nigeria’s game against South Africa on the 10th of June. The process of his switch is not as straightforward as many anticipated as it involves series of communication between the Nigeria FA, FIFA and the English FA. Already Aina has taken the first step by telling England and FIFA of his intention to switch allegiance to Nigeria. FIFA will write to England, who are then suppose to send Aina’s papers to the Nigerian FA. England need to transfer his registration to Nigeria by sending his papers, which Nigeria will now send to FIFA for procession, which usually takes ten days to complete barring international games. For now, the speed a...

'US Defence System Ready To Counter North Korean Missiles'

Image
America's controversial anti-missile system in South Korea is now operational, the US military says. The Terminal High Altitude Defence (THAAD) system has "early capability" to defend against North Korean missiles, South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang Gyun said. However, he did not say when Washington and Seoul expected THAAD to be operating fully. The United States and South Korea say THAAD is crucial to counter North Korea's weapons advances. When completed, it will consist of six truck-mounted launchers that can fire up to 48 interceptors toward incoming missiles detected by the system's x-band radar. The North conducted two nuclear tests last year alone, and has been speeding up its development of new missiles, including solid-fuel rockets that can be fired from mobile launchers on land and from submarines. ...
